Organizing, Packing and Unpacking Checklist

Packing – for Organizing and Moving

  • Ideas for grouping:
    • By destination (e.g., kitchen, office, storage)
    • By category (e.g., tools, clothing, electronics)
    • By items you’ll want together for a specific task
    • By things you’ll need in one place at one time—even across categories
    • By timing or access (e.g., first night, use-soon)
  • Label boxes for future ease.
    • Consider the goals and needs you may have when looking at the box in the future—this helps guide how much detail to include.
    • You might choose to add a date for tracking or context.
    • A compact format like “2603” (for March 2026) is quick and easy to write.
    • If the day matters, you can add two digits: “260312” for March 12, 2026.
    • For single-digit months or days, use a leading zero (e.g., “2603” vs “263”).

Decluttering and Completion

  • Remove discardables (garbage or recycling)
  • Set aside giveaways
  • Place items that belong elsewhere
  • Group items that suggest categories
  • Scan to register what’s present and spot next steps

Workflow Organizing for Home

  • Identify usable space and containers
  • Match items with spaces they’ll serve
  • Visualize how you want things to be
  • Clarify routines and transitions
  • Adjust placements to support clarity and confidence

Unpacking and Resetting

  • Unpack by category and destination
  • Place things where they’ll be used
  • Group things that suggest routines
  • Remove packaging and discardables
  • Scan for what’s missing or needs rethinking

Closing Note Each step is designed to lead to a usable, lasting result—one that reflects your space, your things, and the purpose they serve.
