Following is a typical process I use when I’m organizing without preplanning—either because there are too many things to see clearly, or because I’ve simply started organizing without a plan. Clarifying goals and moving items to match the goals work together to accomplish momentum and completion.
The immediate goal—distinct from the end goal—is to progress by seeing, moving, and combining what can be readily recognized, grouped, or placed.
My general work habit is to move things when there’s a clear next location, a final destination, or when movement helps me see more.
When I’m touching, moving, and looking at things, I notice details that help me make decisions to fulfill the goals.
So I’m multitasking as I’m mentally and visually clarifying and refining, goals (1st section below) and simultaneously categorizing and moving items (2nd section below) to where they belong or where they’re going next.
Goals I clarify while offering home organizing help and move-in organizing services:
Goals
- Seeing usable space • Noticing items that clearly relate • Spotting what’s ready for discard (garbage or recycling) • Identifying what belongs elsewhere • Getting an image of how things might be grouped or used • Visualizing how I want things to be when the organizing is complete • Matching what I see with any prior plan I’ve made or questions I’ve asked myself
Actions I take that support decluttering services and help complete the organizing:
Categorizing and Moving Items
- Removing discardables • Recycling • Setting aside giveaways • Placing items that belong elsewhere • Grouping items that suggest categories • Scanning to register what’s present and spot next steps • Placing, grouping, or removing items to add clarity.
While I’m moving things, I continue scanning. Each action—whether placing, grouping, or removing—adds clarity to the space and helps me see what’s next.
When I scan,—I’m registering what’s present to:
- Identify usable space and available containers to put things in.
- Use mental imagery to match items with spaces and containers they may fit into or fill. (Similar to doing a puzzle.)
- Spot items ready for discard (garbage or recycling)
- Notice items that clearly belong elsewhere
- See groupings that suggest categories
- Visualize how I want things to be when the organizing is complete
- Match what I see with any prior plan I’ve made or questions I’ve asked myself
This approach supports completion. Momentum helps clarify the next steps, and each action contributes to a usable, coherent result—one that reflects the space, the items, and the purpose they serve.
